1999-2001 Tuscan Sangiovese Issue (June 2006 Issue)

WineBlueBook (formerly QPRwines) is a wine buying guide that compares wine ratings and price to determine value.

In this issue you will find 1999, 2000 and 2001 Sangiovese from Tuscany. Although the 2002 Tuscan wines are in market, the vintage was not well received by the critics and therefore there were not many scored wines. Best to avoid the vintage.

When combining all the vintages by score and price, the 2001 vintage has 15 "Great Value" wines while the 2000 vintage has three and there are no "Great Value" wines for 1999.

When comparing wines scoring 90 points or more, 62% of the 1999 vintage wines average over 90 points while the 2001 vintage has 59% and the 2000 vintage has only 51%. In terms of price, all three vintages are close with an average price of $42 for the 2001, $48 for the 2000 vintage while the 2003 averages $50 for a 90 point wine.

At the high end, the 2001 Podere Poggio Scalette, Alta Valle della Greve il Carbonaione averages 94 points and at $48 it is 46% of the average $103 price for a similar scoring wine earning a "Great Value" moniker. At $30, the 2000 Sette Ponti, Toscana Crognolo averages 92 points and eans a 47% "Great Value" rating. At $18 the 2001 2000 Fattoria dei Cerro, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano averages 90 points and earns a 38% QPR. At the value end of $9, the 2001 La Parrina, Rosso averages 88 points and earns a 27% "Great Value" QPR.

These four wines and 408 more are included in this issue.
