Port glasses are small stemmed glasses, usually with a narrow, tapering bowl, made for Port and other fortified and dessert wines. They’re small because the pours are: Wine Spectator’s Dr. Vinny explains that Port’s high alcohol calls for smaller-than-normal servings. Our overall pick is the Riedel Vinum Port, a dishwasher-safe crystal glass that Riedel designs for Port, Madeira and Marsala. Below are five port and dessert wine glasses, from a set of twelve tasters to a single handmade splurge, compared on what their makers and major retailers publish.
How we chose
We don’t test glassware. Every capacity, height, material and care instruction here comes from the maker’s page or, where the maker doesn’t sell in the US, from a major US retailer’s page, opened in October 2026, and is listed in the Sources box. Claims about how a shape affects aroma are the makers’ words, and we say so. We looked for current glasses sold for Port and dessert wines by established glassmakers, and covered everyday crystal, handblown glasses and an affordable set for tastings. Prices are rough bands from makers or major US retailers in October 2026, never Amazon prices. Our full method is on how we rate wine and accessories.
Note: Glass “capacity” can mean two things. Riedel’s US site lists a recommended pour (1.35 oz for the Vinum Port), while retailers list the full bowl (8.81 oz at Sur La Table). The table uses the full volume where it is published.

The best port glasses
Riedel Vinum Port
Who it’s for: anyone who wants one glass for Port, Madeira, Marsala and vermouth that can go in the dishwasher.
Key specs (Riedel and Sur La Table):
- Sold as a pair; Riedel item 6416/60.
- 8.81 oz full volume (Sur La Table); 6.6 inches tall and 2.9 inches across at the widest point.
- Machine-made crystal glass; Riedel doesn’t say whether it’s lead-free.
- Riedel calls it dishwasher safe; Sur La Table adds that hand-washing is recommended.
- Riedel lists it for Tawny, Vintage and LBV Port, Colheita, Madeira, Marsala, Noilly Prat, vermouth and other sweet wines. Riedel says the egg-shaped bowl lets the bouquet develop and softens the perceived alcohol (maker’s claim).
The trade-off: at about $42 a glass, it’s not cheap for a glass you may use a few times a month.
It sold for about $85 for two at Riedel US and Sur La Table in October 2026. In our view, it’s the safest choice: a dedicated Port shape from a major glassmaker, and easy to care for. Check the Riedel Vinum Port glasses on Amazon.
Glasvin Dessert Wine Glass
Who it’s for: someone who wants a handblown glass without the hand-washing that usually comes with it.
Key specs (Wine Enthusiast):
- Sold as a pair; 6.8 fl oz (200 ml); 8.5 inches tall, 3.1 inches wide.
- Handblown from lead-free crystal, with laser-cut rims and hand-pulled stems.
- Dishwasher safe on the bottom rack.
- Designed for Gabriel Kreuther, a two-Michelin-star restaurant in New York. Glasvin is a New York brand founded in 2019.
The trade-off: it’s the smallest bowl here, and the retailer’s description mentions late-harvest Riesling and Sauternes rather than Port.
It sold for about $75 for two at Wine Enthusiast in October 2026, the lowest price per glass among the handmade picks. Check the Glasvin dessert wine glass on Amazon.
Zalto Denk’Art Sweet Wine Glass
Who it’s for: a collector who drinks a range of sweet wines and wants one very fine glass for all of them.
Key specs (Zalto and Wine Enthusiast):
- Sold singly.
- Zalto lists a 320 ml filling quantity, 230 mm height and 85 mm width; Wine Enthusiast lists 12 oz, 9 1/8 inches tall and 3 1/3 inches across.
- Hand crafted and lead-free (Wine Enthusiast).
- Wine Enthusiast lists it for Port, Madeira, Sherry, Sauternes, Tokaji, ice wine, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese and even single malt. The retailer says Kurt Zalto crafted it to bring out the acidity in sweet wines.
- Wine Enthusiast recommends washing Zalto glasses in the dishwasher rather than by hand, because twisting a delicate stem can break it. It advises minimal detergent and no phosphate-free detergents.
The trade-off: it’s the tallest and most expensive glass per piece here, and it is very thin. It’s for a careful home.
It sold for about $76 a glass at Wine Enthusiast in October 2026. We’d choose it if you pour ice wine and Sauternes as often as Port. Check the Zalto Denk’Art sweet wine glass on Amazon.
Zwiesel Glas Alloro Port Glass
Who it’s for: Port drinkers who want a handmade glass designed for Port in particular.
Key specs (Zwiesel Glas):
- Sold as a pair; item 122182.
- 310 ml; 217 mm tall (about 8.5 inches); 72 mm across.
- Handmade, mouth-blown crystal glass.
- Zwiesel lists it for Vintage and Tawny Port, Colheita, Madeira, Marsala, Sherry, Banyuls and vermouth, and says the tapered “aroma chimney” balances Port’s strong alcohol (maker’s claim).
The trade-off: care advice is inconsistent. The description says this delicate glass should be washed by hand, while the product details say dishwasher safe. We’d wash it by hand. Zwiesel’s own shop showed only euro prices (€109.90 for two) when we checked, so look for it at US retailers.

Ravenscroft INAO Tasting Glass
Who it’s for: hosting a Port or dessert-wine tasting, or anyone who wants a dozen small glasses for little money.
Key specs (Ravenscroft):
- Set of 12; item TIP-29-12.
- 7 oz; 6.25 inches tall; made in Poland.
- Ravenscroft sells it as its Essentials Port/International Taster and calls it a favorite in winery tasting rooms, with a tall chimney and a durable build.
The trade-off: Ravenscroft doesn’t say what it’s made of, whether it’s lead-free, or whether it’s dishwasher safe. It’s a tasting-room workhorse, not fine crystal.
It sold for about $60 for twelve on Ravenscroft’s site in October 2026, about $5 a glass. Our pick for a party: you can pour several Ports side by side without washing glasses between them. Check the Ravenscroft INAO tasting glasses on Amazon.
What to look for in port glasses
Size and pour
Port and other fortified wines are stronger than table wine, which is the whole reason for a smaller glass. The NIAAA counts 3 to 4 fl oz of fortified wine at about 17% alcohol as one US standard drink, against 5 oz of table wine at about 12%. In our view, a glass of about 6 to 12 oz full volume, like the ones here, leaves plenty of room above a pour that size.
Shape
The makers explain their shapes in similar terms: Riedel says its shape softens the perceived alcohol, Zwiesel Glas says its tapered chimney balances the alcohol, and Glasvin’s retailer says the narrow bowl focuses aroma. These are design claims rather than measured results. Dr. Vinny’s view is more relaxed: any good wineglass will do.
Crystal, handmade or machine-made
The Riedel Vinum is machine-made; the Glasvin, Zalto and Zwiesel Alloro are handmade and cost more per glass. Glasvin’s retailer calls its glass ultra-light, and Wine Enthusiast’s care notes for Zalto show how delicate a thin handmade stem can be. “Lead-free” is stated for Glasvin and Zalto; Riedel and Zwiesel say “crystal glass” without saying either way.
Dishwasher or hand wash
Check before you buy. Riedel and Glasvin say dishwasher safe (Glasvin on the bottom rack), Wine Enthusiast recommends the dishwasher for Zalto, and Zwiesel’s Alloro page contradicts itself. If you hand-wash, hold the bowl, not the base, so you don’t twist the stem.
Tip: Dr. Vinny likes his Port a little cooler than room temperature, so there’s no need to serve it warm.

Frequently asked questions
Why are port glasses so small?
Because Port is served in smaller pours. Wine Spectator's Dr. Vinny explains that Port's high alcohol makes smaller-than-normal pours appropriate, so Port-specific glasses are small to match.
Can I drink Port from a regular wine glass?
Yes. Dr. Vinny says any good wineglass will do, and that he uses all-purpose red wine glasses himself. A dedicated port glass is a nice extra, not a requirement.
How much Port is a standard pour?
The US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism counts 3 to 4 fl oz of fortified wine such as port or sherry, at about 17% alcohol, as one standard drink, against 5 oz for table wine.
Are port glasses the same as dessert wine glasses?
Mostly. Makers sell them for the same family of wines: Riedel lists its Vinum Port for Port, Madeira and Marsala, and Zalto's sweet wine glass covers Port, Sauternes and Tokaji too.
Can port glasses go in the dishwasher?
Some can. Riedel calls the Vinum Port dishwasher safe, and Glasvin's dessert glass goes on the bottom rack. Zwiesel Glas gives conflicting care advice for its Alloro, so hand-washing is the safe choice there.
