Four box wines with 87 to 88 critic points, the price per 750 ml bottle for Black Box, Bota Box and Franzia, and how long boxed wine lasts once opened.
By Wine Blue Book editorial teamUpdated 6 min read

The best box wine right now, on published critic scores, comes from Black Box: its Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon has 88 points from Tastings.com, and its Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Rosé have 87 each. A 3-liter box costs about $18 to $19, which is about $4.50 to $4.75 per 750 ml bottle. This guide is for anyone who wants an everyday wine that stays fresh for weeks, at a lower price per glass than most bottles.
How we picked
We don’t taste the wines ourselves. Each pick has a published professional score, here from Tastings.com, the review site of the Beverage Testing Institute, which scores wines on a 100-point scale. Box wines are usually non-vintage (NV), a blend of more than one year, so the score applies to the NV blend rather than a single year. We checked the shelf price at two US retailers in October 2026 and converted it to the price of one 750 ml bottle. Our Blue Book Value method applies its value thresholds to that 750 ml price for boxes and other large formats: 85 to 87 points is a Great Value at $10 or less per bottle, and 88 or 89 points is a Great Value at $15 or less.
Note: Box wine blends change from batch to batch, and each Tastings.com review below shows a tasting date of February 2024. Prices vary by state and store.
The best box wine at a glance
| Wine | Critic score | Price (Oct 2026) | Per 750 ml | Verdict |

| Black Box Chardonnay NV (California), 3L | 87, Tastings.com | about $19 | about $4.75 | Great Value |
| Black Box Pinot Grigio NV (California), 3L | 87, Tastings.com | about $19 | about $4.75 | Great Value |
| Black Box Rosé NV (California), 3L | 87, Tastings.com | about $18 to $19 | about $4.50 to $4.75 | Great Value |
How we worked out the per-bottle price: a 3-liter box holds 3,000 ml, which is four 750 ml bottles, so we divided the box price by four. A 5-liter box holds about 6.67 bottles.
Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon NV (Chile)
- Score: 88 points, Tastings.com (tasting date February 2024), the only professional score we found.
- Price: about $19 per 3-liter box, checked October 2026 ($18.99 at Target, which lists the region as Chile, and $18.99 at The Liquor Barn). That is about $4.75 per 750 ml bottle.
- Verdict: Great Value.
Our pick overall: the highest score among current box wines we could verify. Tastings.com’s reviewer describes a spicy, fruity Cabernet with black cherry, coffee and vanilla, a medium body and dusty tannins (the drying feel from grape skins). It is a good house red for pot roast, burgers or steak night; see our guide to wine with steak for more.
Black Box Chardonnay NV (California)
- Score: 87 points, Tastings.com (tasting date February 2024), the only professional score we found.
- Price: about $19 per box, checked October 2026 ($18.99 at Target and $18.99 at The Liquor Barn). About $4.75 per bottle.
- Verdict: Great Value.
The reviewer calls it a solid house Chardonnay: dry and crisp, with green and yellow apple, lemon and a light touch of oak. Black Box also makes a separate Buttery Chardonnay, so check which one you are buying. Try it with roast chicken, turkey or shellfish.
Black Box Pinot Grigio NV (California)
- Score: 87 points, Tastings.com (tasting date February 2024), the only professional score we found.
- Price: about $19 per box, checked October 2026 ($18.99 at Target and $18.99 at The Liquor Barn). About $4.75 per bottle.
- Verdict: Great Value.
The reviewer found a dry, lively white with lemon, grapefruit and white flowers, and calls it a versatile everyday wine. Our pick for a party or a hot afternoon: light, fresh and easy with grilled chicken, white fish or vegetables.
Black Box Rosé NV (California)
- Score: 87 points, Tastings.com (tasting date February 2024), the only professional score we found.
- Price: about $18 to $19 per box, checked October 2026 ($17.99 at Target and $18.99 at The Liquor Barn). About $4.50 to $4.75 per bottle.
- Verdict: Great Value.
The reviewer describes a dry, round rosé full of ripe strawberry and raspberry, and calls it an easy summer sipper. Serve it cold with baked ham, grilled salmon or a picnic spread.
Black Box vs Bota Box vs Franzia: price per bottle
These are the three box brands most shoppers ask about. Here is what a 750 ml bottle’s worth costs, from Target’s prices in October 2026 (regular prices, not sale prices):
| Box | Size | Price | Per 750 ml |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Box Chardonnay | 3L | $18.99 | about $4.75 |
| Bota Box Chardonnay | 3L | $18.99 | about $4.75 |
| Bota Box Nighthawk Black Red Blend | 3L | $19.99 | about $5.00 |
| Franzia Chardonnay | 3L | $13.99 | about $3.50 |
| Franzia Chardonnay | 5L | $16.99 | about $2.55 |
Bota Box isn’t on our list because the only professional score we found, 86 points for its NV Chardonnay from Tastings.com in 2022, is archived: Tastings.com says it can no longer certify that rating without a current sample. Franzia is the cheapest per bottle by far, but we found no professional scores for it. Costco’s Kirkland Signature 3-liter Cabernet Sauvignon 2023 also has 91 points from Tastings.com, but it is sold only at Costco, so it can’t meet our two-retailer rule here. See our best Costco wine guide for other Kirkland wines.
How long does box wine last once opened?
Much longer than an open bottle, because the box and tap keep air away from the wine. Bota Box credits a “no light and air” design for this.
- Bota Box says its box and spout keep wine fresh for up to one month after opening.
- Black Box’s listings at Target say its boxes stay fresh for up to six weeks after opening.
Those are the brands’ own figures. Our guide to how long wine lasts after opening takes a more cautious line of two to three weeks in the fridge, which we’d treat as the safe plan. Keep an open box cool and out of direct sun, and keep white and rosé boxes in the fridge. If the wine starts to smell flat or vinegary, it is past its best.
Tip: A box sits flat on the shelf, so pouring can be awkward. A box wine dispenser stand lifts the spout so a glass fits underneath.
How to find more good-value wine
- Do the per-bottle math. Divide a 3-liter box price by four. Under $5 per bottle is hard to beat with a bottle of similar quality.
- Check for a score with a source. Box brands often say “award-winning” without naming the award. Look for a named publication and score; our guide to wine ratings explains how to read them.
- Compare with cheap bottles. If you want variety more than volume, our list of the best cheap wine has bottled picks with the same method.
We recheck these prices at least every three months and update the picks when new scores appear.
